Working on and Through Denial

Keynote and Colloquium

10–11 October 2025 · Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH), Hamburg

Omer Bartov, Hanna Pfeifer, Laro Bogan

“Working on and Through Denial” consisted of a public keynote by Omer Bartov and a closed workshop for invited participants. It was part of the long-term project “On Denial”.

In his keynote, Omer Bartov shared insights from his research process behind his recently published article “A State of Denial”. The workshop provided a space for transdisciplinary dialogue on denial, particularly in relation to Bartov’s work on mass violence and genocide. Bringing together academic and artistic perspectives, participants were encouraged to connect these insights to their own work.

As part of the workshop, Senem Gökçe Oğultekin presented her video work “DUN/home”, which addresses the Armenian Genocide. The discussion focused specifically on her artistic process. Jan Wilkens supplemented the conversation with reflections on the “Culture of Denial”, drawing on Saree Makdisi’s work and exploring denialism in the context of the climate crisis.

Special thanks to Maryam El Ouadhane for her organizational support.
